Welcome to Thesis & Dissertations Resources. To effectively begin your writing journey, you'll need an APA Style 7th Edition Manual, one of our provided templates, and the thesis & dissertation checklist. This page offers essential resources to help you write, format, and complete your thesis or dissertation. Whether you're in the early stages of writing or preparing to submit, these tools are designed to support you every step of the way, ensuring that your work meets academic standards with ease.

Getting Started

  1. Download one of the templates and the checklist.
  2. Watch the introductory video to familiarize yourself with the template.
  3. Begin writing in the template or move your text into the template.
  4. Assign MS Word Styles to each heading and update the table of contents. Watch this video to learn how.
  5. Check your documents against each item in the checklist. Use the tutorials for help.

Timeline After Defense

  1. Defense Revisions and Revise

    After the defense of your thesis/dissertation, make revisions suggested from your committee and chair.

  2. Send to Graduate Counselor for Revision

    Send your thesis/dissertation to your graduate coordinator, and make suggested revisions.

  3. Send to Dean's Office for Revision

    Send your thesis/dissertation to the McKay School dean’s office, and make suggested revisions.

  4. Submit to Dean's Office for Approval

    Submit your thesis/dissertation in PDF/ETD format to the McKay School dean’s office for approval.

  5. Upload to Gradprog

    Upload your thesis/dissertation in PDF/ETD format to graprog after approval from the McKay School dean’s office.

Nov. 14: Last day to hold defense
Nov. 21: Deadline to submit the electronic MS Word version to the MSE dean’s office
Dec. 12: Deadline to submit PDF to msegradsec@byu.edu
Dec. 16: Deadline to upload ETD (PDF) to Gradprog
 

April 2026 Graduation Deadlines:

Jan. 23: Last day to apply for graduation
March 20: Defense has to be held by this day
March 27: Deadline to submit the electronic MS Word version to the MSE dean’s office
April 17: Deadline to submit PDF to msegradsec@byu.edu
April 20: Deadline to upload ETD (PDF) to Gradprog
 

June 2026 Graduation Deadlines:

March 12: Last day to apply for graduation to walk in April 2026 (May 4 for those not wanting to walk)
May 15: Defense has to be held by this day

August 2026 Graduation Deadlines:

Once your thesis/dissertation has been released for publication on the BYU Scholars Archive website, it will be available for worldwide access. You can search for and download theses/dissertations and faculty publications on this website and access article metrics (e.g., number of downloads).
